Scientific library of VolRC RAS was founded in April 1995 together with the formation of the institute. In 2009 the library received the status of a scientific library, that is the library supporting the development of science; meeting the information needs of academic institutions and people, needs that are connected with the research activity, on the basis of the corresponding fund and information-retrieval apparatus. At first the library occupied the room of 25 m2. In 2003 an attic in one of the buildings was transformed into the library. Now the library occupies about 100 m2.
The VolRC RAS library’s fund comprises over 24 000 issues, including more than 8 000 books, over 3 000 preprints, dissertations, dissertation abstracts, information analysis notes, and reports on research work, more than 7 000 periodicals. The library contains one of the most complete collection of statistical data (over 2 600 issues) in Vologda.
The library contains literature on problems in economics, ecology, sociology, demography, philosophy, and psychology. Reference works are the core of the fund. The library takes out a subscription for 40 newspapers and journals in economics.
The library serves primary for research associates, postgraduate students, students of economic specialties from Vologda universities, and pupils studying in the Research Educational Centre of VolRC RAS. Around 4 000 people visit the library every year; the loan comprises over 6 000 issues.
In 2001 an electronic catalogue was created to provide more convenience in using the librarian resources. It allows not only finding the literature using key words, titles, authors, publication year, etc., but reflects the current state of the library collections (for example, presence or absence of an issue in the library while another reader is using it). Also the electronic catalogue introduces readers with new issues (over 100 items a year).
The search in the electronic catalogue is also possible in periodicals – articles from various journals with abstracts since 1995 till present.
All VolRC RAS publications and statistical data have full-text electronic copies in the local area network.
All computers in the library have access to the Internet.
In the library experienced and highly-qualified specialists are ready to help readers with the choice of literature.
